  1. 'Bernardo to Barca? I can't see it happening'published at 10:42

    Transfer gossip logo

Manchester City have reportedly turned down a bid for Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva from Paris St-Germain.

Silva, 28, is a long-term target of Barcelona too.

Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards told the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast: "He's one of those footballers a lot of people love. He's a clever footballer, a beautiful footballer. He was going a little underappreciated in Manchester until these rumours started he might want to leave.

"City don't want to let him go - they've let Sterling, Zinchenko and Jesus go this summer.

"Barcelona have been sniffing round like an unwanted dog for most of the transfer window saying they want to sign him. I'm not surprised City have just said no. It's been rumbling on for ages, they're getting tired of the rumours constantly coming out of Spain.

"I can't see him going anywhere. He thanked Manchester City fans for how much affection they showed him. I think he'll stay at City.

"Barcelona haven't got any money. They're borrowing to sign every player. Just leave it alone, Barcelona. You've had one too many to drink, go home. Drink some water."

  4. 'Man City have matched the charisma of other big European clubs'published at 10:00 25 August

Erling Haaland and Pep GuardiolaImage source, Getty Images

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City now have the "charisma" to attract the biggest players in the world, as proven with the signing of Erling Haaland.

On the Premier League's biggest summer signing, he told Football Focus: "We can't deny how incredibly talented he is.

"And from what I've seen of him so far is that he's a huge competitor and every transition is incredible.

"But we've had a lot of legends here, who have all made big contributions."

Speaking about what might have deterred previous big-name footballers signing for City, Guardiola added: "Maybe they chose another club because the charisma at Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich was higher than us.

"We are still new in the highest hierarchy of Europe, just one decade in comparison to their long history.

"So to have one of the best strikers come here shows we've done really well and shows our charisma and standing."

  5. Man City v Crystal Palace: Head-to-head recordpublished at 12:03 24 August

Manchester City v Crystal Palace 24 Premier League games - Man City 14 wins, 46 goals and 14 clean sheets; Crystal Palace 4 wins, 16 goals and 5 clean sheets
    • Crystal Palace were one of four teams Manchester City failed to beat in the Premier League last season, and were the only side Pep Guardiola's men failed to score against.

    • Manchester City have only lost two of their past 54 league games kicking off at 15:00 on a Saturday - but both have come against Palace at Etihad Stadium.

    • The Eagles have taken seven points from their past four league matches at City, as many as they had in their previous 15 visits.

    • Manchester City have found themselves two goals behind in three of their past five Premier League matches - as many as in their previous 72 games - but didn't lose any of them.

  6. 'Sometimes a change is good' - City enjoy warm weather training before Barcelona friendlypublished at 14:40 23 August

Manchester City have been training in Spain before Wednesday's charity game against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

All money raised from ticket sales will go towards research for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), after Juan Carlos Unzue, former Barca player, coach and friend of Pep Guardiola, was diagnosed with the illness in 2020.

ALS is an incurable neurodegenerative disease that sees patients suffer a progressive loss of function, with their life prognosis shortened by four to six years.

Guardiola said the warm weather training is a good opportunity for his players to charge their batteries before the resumption of the Champions League.

"Sometimes a change is good," he said.

"It is the last time we have a long week, and then every three days we have a game."

  7. 'De Bruyne brilliance to get City firing again'published at 12:57 23 August

Nigel Rothband, The Man City Show podcast, external

I’m just catching my breath after an entertaining, competitive and thrilling encounter at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Great credit must go to Newcastle United, who at times controlled the game. What an improved side they are from last season, when City beat them both home and away with an aggregate score of 9-0. Allan Saint-Maximin was outstanding and he gave Kyle Walker a very difficult afternoon.

In all three of City’s games this season, despite being unbeaten and having gained seven points out of a possible nine, they have not been at their best. They are certainly not yet firing on all cylinders.

Games are often changed by a piece of individual brilliance. How many players on the planet would first have seen that pass to Bernardo Silva and then, secondly, executed it so perfectly? Well, fortunately Kevin de Bruyne is one.

I very much look forward to witnessing many more pieces of brilliance from KDB as the season progresses, and let’s hope they will help get the Manchester City engine working at full power again before too long.

  8. A special 102nd birthday celebrationpublished at 11:14 23 August

Nigel Rothband, The Man City Show podcast, external

I spent a very memorable day on Sunday with the wonderful man who introduced me to Manchester City. I am talking about my City-mad dad, Geoffrey, who celebrated his 102nd birthday on Sunday.

Dad took me to my first-ever game at Maine Road, when City were in the old second division. We have stood and sat next to each other for numerous Wembley cup finals and we were together for both the Paul Dickov and Sergio Aguero goals.

Newcastle United have been his least favourite team for as long as I can remember. It’s all because they beat his beloved City in the FA Cup final of 1955, and he’s never forgiven them.

All dad wanted for his birthday was three points against the Magpies and that didn’t happen. It was a brilliant match and credit to Newcastle, who were brave, physical and they produced a great team performance.

The day ended with a hard-earned point and a special Twitter message to my dad from Bernardo Silva.

What a day, what a match, what a man.

  9. Silva in Garth's team of the weekpublished at 09:25 23 August

    Garth's team of the week

After his cultured finish and performance in Manchester City's 3-3 draw with Newcastle, Bernardo Silva features in Garth Crooks' team of the week.

"The ball from Kevin De Bruyne to Silva was sensational and matched only by the finish," said Garth. "The pass split Newcastle in two and the finish by Silva provided Manchester City with a well-deserved point. In fact the entire move had me on my feet applauding. However, it was the coolness of Silva's finish in the white-hot atmosphere of St James' Park that had me brimming with admiration.

"It was also the Portugal international's ingenuity that provided the opening and assist for Ilkay Gundogan to put City ahead in the opening exchanges. This was a great game of football served up by two teams going for the jugular vein."

  10. 'Thank goodness for KDB!' Your views on City's thriller at Newcastlepublished at 13:34 22 August

    Your views banner

We asked you for your thoughts following Manchester City's six-goal thriller against Newcastle United at St James' Park on Sunday.

Here are some of your comments:

Chris: A thrilling match. Despite having nearly 100 minutes to do so, City found no way to cope with Newcastle's width and were exposed time after time. Walker had one of his worst games in a City shirt. Two very winnable home games coming up, so onwards and upwards.

Karen: City have a 'never say die' attitude, which continues to contribute to their success. Newcastle were excellent but City never gave up.

Martin: Newcastle fully deserved their draw, they played really well. Just like in the first two games, City were off the pace for much of the game, but that shouldn't detract from Newcastle's performance. Thank goodness for KDB!

Alan: What a game! I feel City are still bedding in their new striker set-up. The cutting edge was a step out, but you've got to give Newcastle praise as they were a major reason for this. I'm sure that this helps us moving forward and hopefully announces Newcastle's arrival as a major force. Matches like that remind me of what I love about this game.

  11. Arrival of King Kompanypublished at 11:22 22 August

On this day in 2008 Manchester City - under the management of Mark Hughes - signed defender Vincent Kompany from Hamburg.

The midfielder was converted into a centre-back and spent 11 seasons at City - winning four league titles, four League Cups and two FA Cups.

  12. 'Other teams would have folded'published at 10:00 22 August

Manchester City deserve credit once again for their mentality after they recovered from two goals down at a bouncing St James' Park to salvage a point against Newcastle.

Those are the views of former Magpies first-team coach Alex Bruce and the Telegraph's northern journalist Luke Edwards, who felt City underlined their title credentials in the second half on Sunday.

"Most teams who come to St James' Park, with the crowd like that, are beaten at 3-1 - they're gone," Edwards told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"For City to come back and become the team most likely to win, you just see they are mentality monsters. They didn't panic, like last season against Aston Villa.

"It's proof for Pep that his team have the mentality, resolve and strength of character to do it all again this season."

Bruce agreed, arguing the comeback was the "sign of champions".

"That's why they won the league last year," he said. "A lot of teams would have folded."
